Ever since Gutenberg set off the printing revolution from Mainz, near Frankfurt, that city has been the largest host annually for the world’s bibliophile community. From 10-14 October 2012, the Frankfurt Book Fair will see 400+ exhibitors from 100+ countries, showcasing their wares to over 7000 publishing companies rubbing shoulders with over 300,000 bookworms, in the presence of nearly 10,000 accredited journalists.
The first three days are devoted exclusively for business visitors making new deals in international publishing rights, licensing fees, and other such trade agreements. On the last two days, the general public can and have their fill of the sights and smells of all things showcased by the exhibitors.
One of the features of the book fair is the space devoted to the Fair’s designated Guest of Honour. It is New Zealand’s turn this year, with its motto “Bevor es bei euch hell wird” (While you were sleeping).
With a variety of visitor engagement ideas planned before, during and after the mega-fair, it is no wonder that the number of events is another mind-boggling figure: 3200. Besides four major conferences for international publishers, there is a two-day event, StoryDrive, the “world’s first conference for cross-media business and visionary storytelling”.
The topics in focus at this year’s edition include the future of children’s books, the State of the Arts and a new tourism area, the Travel-Gallery. To add to the topical diversity, the Frankfurter Buchmesse offers much more to meet the needs of all kinds of visitors, young and old, amateur to profesional, fresher to veteran.
